These bikes listed below are great bikes for beginners and people just getting started in cycle travel.
When I was looking a my first touring bike to purchase I had some difficult finding resources regarding budget bike touring bike options.
This post is a compilation of 20 cheap touring bikes that are under $1,000 USD, in no particular order.
*Please note that some bikes in the list are not traditional touring bikes, some bikes are gravel and adventure bikes but still under $1000. They offer the option for front and rear rack mounting and will be fine for long distance touring. Even giving you multiple terrain options. Off road exploring anyone?

Things to Consider
- The 1×11 group-set, 42T/11 ratio, would be troublesome on a loaded bike for touring. The lowest gear would make it hard to get you up steep gradients.
- The SCHWALBE Marathon Plus Tour tyres that come stock with the bike are a bit heavy at around 940 grams each.
- The internal cable that runs through the down tube, is loosely fitted to the bike. When you wiggle the cable it hits the tube on the inside and makes a noise.
- A downside to the geometry of the bike is it may feel slightly cramped. It is most likely due to the 170mm crank. Most other brands use a 175mm crank for this size bike.
Overall this Polygon bike is a good entry level bike touring rig, that is not perfect and some of the things to consider are only trivial. You get what you pay for and in terms of this bike it is value for money.
For me though I may want to change the gearing ration for fully loaded tours just to make it that much more comfortable when on tour. That is the main thing to consider about this bike.
Marin Four Corners Touring Disc Road Bike ($815 or $1,199 AUD, AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA)
Great things about the bike
- This Marin Bike is advertised as any anywhere bike. This is true you can take it on gravel and tarmac.
- Stemming from the bikes hybrid use, it is versatile. Allowing you to do so much. Can be a one bike for many styles of riding.
- It is comfortable, fun and easy to ride.
- A really good option for someone looking to get started with touring and/or commuting.
- Fairly solid build, as Marin know their stuff with mountain bikes, they are build to withstand heavy use.
- Not like the Polygon, racks are not standard. But it offers to appropriate mounting points for racks and mud guards.

Things to Consider
- 13.7 kg is a little on the heavy side. Considering this bike is build not only for touring in mind. Where weight is not much of a issue or matters as much. If you are looking at this bike for Bikepacking or commuting it is extra weight.
- The bottle cage points are in unusual positions on the bike. It has 6 bottle cage mounting points. Out of the three on the inner frame, two are up higher then normal. And makes it hard and pretty much impossible to fit normal sized bottles.
- This is a trivial point, however the stock handlebars included with this bike are more narrow then others. If you are planning to use a Bikepacking style handlebar roll bag, then it may not be wide enough. And also it may be tight with other handlebar bags.
Fuji Touring Road Bike ($999.99)
I have recommended this version of the Fuji Touring bike range as it is $200 cheap in comparison to the Fuji Disc. Not having disc brakes as a option is not really a deal breaker, in my opinion.
Great things about the bike
- Depending on your preference. This bike has bar-end shifters, making it a more traditional bike touring design.
- The bike includes a rear rack. But even better it includes a tie down strap.
- The Fuji comes with Vittoria Randonneur tyres. That are highly puncture resistant tyres that get amazing mileage.
- The Fuji comes in two colour options. Black and Dark Blue, which is great if, as a couple, you decide you both like the fuji you can differentiate the two.
- The drivetrain ratio is perfection, Fuji have had a good think about touring up steep hills, this 11-34T, 9-speed. Should be great for mountains and the flats. Even if the bike is fully loaded.

Things to Consider
- The saddle on this bike is not the most comfortable. But having that said this is a common thing with touring bikes as saddles differ in preference for the individual rider.
- However the Vittoria Randonneur tyres included on the bike, are notoriously slow rolling or high resistance.

Things to Consider
- Advertised as a city bike, seems best for commuting, but still could be a good bike touring option. As it includes a rack and seems good enough for a short to medium sized tour.
- Some of the bikes I have recommended in this list are flat bars. As a personal preference I like drops or butterfly bars. Offer multiple hand positions. Flat bars are not ideal for longer bicycle tours, but they can also be changed

Things to Consider
- This is not a touring specific bike but still can be used as one. If you are looking at getting this Giant consider getting one that comes with rear and front racks.
- The tyres are not as puncture resistance as hoped, you may need to look at getting better tyres on this bike
Fuji Jari 2.3 2020 ($956 USD or $1399 AUD)
The Fuji Jari 2.3 2020 is a lightweight and versatile adventure road bike which allows you to switch from gravel racing to touring. Looks alone this bike is pretty. Maybe it is also that sub $1000 cheap bike touring price tag coming in at only $956.

Breezer Radar Expert 2019 ($969.99 USD or $1,400 AUD)
Great things about the bike
- Exceptional value for its price
- Clearance for tires up to 2.1-inches (53mm) which is nice and wide
- front and rear rack mounts
- 5 bottle cage/accessory mounts
- The Oval handlebars offer a 25-degree flared drop. Providing a wider hand position for more challenging terrain. And options to fit larger handlebar bags
- Tektro HY/RD’s disc brakes use hydraulic pressure to clamp the pads on the rotors
- The breaks are also cable-actuated from the caliper to the lever making it easier for repairing on the road
- chromoly steel frame and fork
- very comfortable ride, Comfort is the name of the game with the Radar. I have tested the WTB Riddlers and they also add to the smooth riding of this Breezer

Things to Consider
- the Radar Expert’s rims are tubeless ready, the tires are not
- the tall head tube does raise the top tube higher the most bikes of the same size, when testing the bike even though the bike appeared, on paper, to be the right size it was slightly uncomfortable.
- Might be best to go for a smaller size and raise the seat post
The Bike is suited to many different styles and types of riding
Adventure Flat White 2019 ($529.99)
Great things about the bike
- superb value tourer, with the very basics but you can not go wrong with the price tag

Frequently Asked Questions about Touring Bikes
What is a good touring bike? and How do I choose a touring bike?
When you are looking for a sub $1000 touring bike you want something budget but if you can you want the most bang for your buck. So I have included a list of all the things you want to be looking out for in terms of a great touring bike. If you want to read more check out ‘Ultimate Touring Bike Buyers Guide’ blog post.
- Frame Material, Ideally steel (heavier in weight) but still Aluminium (lighter) is good to. More expensive bikes do have Titanium and Platinum frames
- 700c Wheels are most common with touring bikes
- Touring Bicycle Handlebars, drop bars or butterfly bars are generally the best
- Handlebar Breaks and shifters, Bar-end shifters are iconic to touring bikes but brake end combo shifters are still used for touring
- Adequate gear ratios and sizes, anywhere from 18 to 27 gears is best for touring, similar to a MTB gearing for getting a loaded bike up hills with little effort is ideal. With crankset, the ideal range for the lowest is around 22 to 30
- Many mounting points, to carry front and rear racks
- Heavy duty and high quality front forks and wheels.
- Offers a long wheel based geometry
- comfortable saddle, however this is not a deal breaker as you can always use your preferred one by replacing the current saddle
Can you use a road bike for touring?
Yes you can! I did this on my first ever tour. If you are on a really tight budget you can use your road bike if you have one. Most road bikes have options for fitting racks. If they don’t you can still find alternative ways to mount racks and gear on your bike.
Hope this post helped you look a little more into the options for a decent budget touring bike under $1000.
There are some really nice options out there if you have a budget of only $1000 and it is great to see so many cheaper options making bike touring and cycle travel adventuring that much more assessable to more people.
Hopefully this made your decision a little easier.
